“We chose Trebon because we did not want to stay in a busy touristy town, but we wanted to be within easy driving distance of Cesky Krumlov (an hour away). Trebon turned out to be just perfect for us.
The old town, which included gated walls, Trebon chateau complex, town square, St Jilji church, and curving streets with quaint houses, was worth several sight-seeing walks. We also took two tours of the chateau to view the Rozmberk and Schwarzenberg apartments; although the guides only spoke Czech we could follow along with the English documents we were given. In the old town square we climbed the tower in the former city hall to get a view of the whole town and surroundings.
We are nature lovers so we were pleasantly surprised by the numerous walking trails in the area. The ones we took included: 12 km trail around the Svet, which started virtually on our doorstep; 7 km Velky Lomnicky trail around another carp pond about 15-minute drive away; 4 km Cervene Blato trail through preserved peatlands also about 15-minute drive away; 4 km Hradecek trail which starts from one of the walled gates of old Trebon. From the explanatory panels on these trails we learned a lot about the history of aquaculture and the carp fishery.
Two of us are vegetarians and although carp is a feature of most restaurant menus we did find enough vegetarian options to be well fed. Most restaurants included English descriptions on menus.
We did not partake of the bicycle trails and mud spa, but those were clearly well used by visiting Czechs.
And we took a day trip to Cesky Krumlov. So all in all, lots to do and the week passed very quickly.”
